That last point matters. Recruiters do not screen applications like academic essays. They scan for relevance. Hiring managers scan for proof. If your resume is vague, scattered, or too broad, it may be technically “complete” but still commercially unconvincing.

This is stronger because it gives context, scope, and commercial relevance. Even without a number, I can understand the work.
For technical or specialised roles, be specific. If the job asks for SAP, Power BI, Python, AutoCAD, Workday, Salesforce, Xero, Tableau, Kubernetes, MAS compliance, workplace safety, payroll processing, procurement, or regional stakeholder management, do not hide those details inside vague sentences. Make them visible.
Recruiters are not mind readers. We are fast readers under pressure. Help us help you.
For example, if you are applying for a finance analyst role in Singapore, skills like financial reporting, variance analysis, Excel modelling, budgeting, SAP, Power BI, and stakeholder reporting may matter more than broad phrases like “business strategy” or “leadership”. If you are applying for HR operations, payroll, employee records, HRIS, onboarding, MOM related processes, and employee lifecycle support may be more relevant than generic “people management”.
The goal is not to look skilled in everything. The goal is to look credible for the role you want.
Do not apply blindly. Read the salary range together with the responsibilities, seniority, and required experience. A job title alone can be misleading. One company’s “Executive” is another company’s “Senior Associate”. One company’s “Manager” may manage people, while another company uses “Manager” for an individual contributor role. Welcome to hiring language, where titles sometimes behave like astrology.
Long open roles are not always fake. Sometimes the employer is picky. Sometimes the budget is unrealistic. Sometimes the hiring manager wants a unicorn but has approved a salary for a pony. You cannot always know, but you can decide whether your fit is strong enough to make the application worthwhile.
Be cautious when you see a job description that looks unusually narrow, oddly specific, or written as if it describes one exact person. That may still be a legitimate role, but it tells you the competition may not be open in the normal way.
My advice is not to become cynical about every posting. Cynicism feels smart, but it can make you miss real opportunities. Be selective, read carefully, and apply where your fit is genuinely strong.
No unexplained gaps that create unnecessary uncertainty
No generic summary that says everything and therefore says nothing
One underrated detail is career logic. If you are applying for a role that looks like a natural next step, the employer understands your motivation quickly. If you are making a career switch, you need to make the transferable link obvious. Do not expect the recruiter to build the bridge for you.
For example, if you are moving from retail operations into customer success, show the connection: client handling, issue resolution, product knowledge, account support, service recovery, stakeholder communication, and performance targets. If you simply apply with a retail heavy resume and hope the employer “sees potential”, you are depending on generosity. Hiring is not built on generosity. It is built on risk reduction.
You applied to a specialist role with only broad generalist experience
Your resume focuses on duties but gives no scope or outcomes
Your career move does not make sense from the employer’s point of view
The painful part is that some of these are fixable. A candidate may have relevant experience but bury it under vague wording. Another candidate may have strong transferable skills but fail to frame them properly. Another may be suitable but upload an old resume that does not reflect their latest work.
Hiring teams are not always fair, consistent, or wonderfully thorough. That is the reality. But you should not make their job harder than necessary. If your application requires too much interpretation, it becomes easier to reject than investigate.
“I recently applied for the Operations Executive role through MyCareersFuture. My background includes order fulfilment coordination, vendor follow up, and daily reporting in a high volume environment, which seems closely aligned with the role requirements. I would appreciate the opportunity to be considered if the position is still open.”
This works better because it reminds the employer why you may be relevant. It does not beg. It does not sound entitled. It gives the person a reason to look again.
Do not follow up every two days. Do not send the same message to five people in the company. Do not write a long emotional explanation about your job search struggle unless the context genuinely calls for it. Employers may sympathise, but they shortlist based on fit.
Proof: My resume includes scope, tools, stakeholders, achievements, or measurable responsibilities.
Clarity: A recruiter can understand my relevance in less than thirty seconds.
