In Singapore, student hiring is competitive because employers often receive many similar looking applications from polytechnic students, university students, private degree students, fresh graduates, and international students. Many candidates have similar modules, similar projects, similar internship timelines, and similar career goals.
So when a recruiter opens your resume, they are not asking, “Is this student hardworking?” Almost everyone claims that. They are asking, “What makes this person relevant to this opening?”

A good student resume should be simple, structured, and easy to scan. You do not need to make it complicated. In fact, the more you try to overdecorate it, the more likely you are to weaken it.

If you have no formal work experience, you are not stuck. You simply need to widen what counts as evidence.
Recruiters do not only evaluate paid work. For student roles, we also look at projects, CCAs, competitions, volunteer work, freelance tasks, family business support, school events, and leadership responsibilities.
The trick is to write these experiences like professional evidence, not like casual participation.

If you have no work experience, build your resume around:
Academic projects with practical outcomes
Group projects where you had a clear role
Most student resumes are scanned quickly at the first stage. That does not mean recruiters do not care. It means the screening process is built around elimination.
When I review a student resume, I usually notice these things first:
Course and year of study
Graduation date and internship availability
Whether the resume matches the role
Any relevant internship, part time work, or project experience
Skills that match the job description
Communication quality
Formatting and clarity
For most student resumes in Singapore, a clean reverse chronological format works best. This means your most recent education and experience appear first.
Keep the resume to one page if you are still a student or recent graduate with limited experience. Two pages may be acceptable if you have multiple internships, strong projects, leadership experience, or technical work worth showing. But do not stretch weak content across two pages just to look more senior. Recruiters can tell.

You do not need every section if you do not have strong content for it. The goal is not to fill space. The goal is to present your strongest evidence in the right order.
Keep this clean and professional. Include your name, mobile number, email address, LinkedIn profile if it is ready, and location as Singapore if relevant.
Avoid adding unnecessary personal details such as NRIC, full residential address, marital status, religion, or date of birth. These do not help your application and can make your resume look outdated.

Use a professional email address. If your email still sounds like a secondary school gaming username, retire it peacefully. It has served its time.
Your summary should be short and role focused. Do not write a generic objective about wanting to learn. Employers already know students want to learn. The stronger question is whether you can help while learning.

You do not need to list every module. Choose the ones that help the recruiter connect your education to the role.
If your GPA is strong, include it. If it is not strong, leave it out unless the employer specifically requests it. This is not about hiding. It is about using limited resume space wisely.

The point is not to pretend you have corporate experience. The point is to show that you have already practised relevant behaviours.
Whether the candidate looks realistic for the level
This is where many students accidentally lose interviews. They write a resume that makes the recruiter work too hard.
For example, if you are applying for a finance internship, do not bury your finance related coursework and Excel skills under unrelated CCA details. If you are applying for a UX role, do not hide your Figma project near the bottom. If you are applying for a customer service part time job, do not forget to mention your retail, F&B, event, or volunteer communication experience.
Recruiters are not mind readers. If the evidence is relevant, bring it closer to the top.
A good student resume guides the recruiter’s attention. A weak one makes the recruiter dig. And in a high volume hiring process, digging is not always going to happen.

In Singapore, resumes are usually preferred over long academic CVs for internships, graduate jobs, part time jobs, and most entry level roles. Keep the template clean. The power comes from the content, not decoration.
That is much stronger because the recruiter can picture the work.
Some students include every school activity because they worry the resume will look empty. But too much irrelevant content can weaken the application.
If you are applying for a data analyst internship, your resume should not spend half a page on unrelated secondary school achievements unless they are exceptional or recent. If you are applying for a customer service role, your customer facing part time work should not be hidden behind academic awards that do not support the job.
Relevance beats volume.
A student resume does not need icons, skill bars, profile photos, colourful blocks, or three columns. These may look nice at first glance, but they often make the resume harder to scan.
Recruiters want clarity. Applicant tracking systems also prefer simple formatting.
A clean Word or PDF resume with strong content will usually outperform a heavily designed resume with weak evidence.
Generic student resumes usually use phrases like:
Passionate learner
Dynamic individual
Strong team player
Excellent communication skills
Able to work under pressure
These are not bad qualities. They are just overused and unsupported.
Show the behaviour instead.
If you worked in F&B during dinner rush, that already shows pressure handling. If you coordinated a CCA event, that shows teamwork and organisation. If you presented research findings, that shows communication.

This is why the same resume will not perform equally well for every role. A resume that works for a retail part time job may not be strong enough for a consulting internship. A resume that works for a research assistant role may need adjustment before applying to a marketing role.
Good student resumes are not generic. They are targeted.

The best student resumes do not try to look impressive through big words. They look impressive because the thinking is clear.
A recruiter should finish reading and think, “This person is junior, but I can see the fit.”
