FAQ

Yes, especially if the mistake appears in a job title, company name, certification, skill, or summary section. One small typo may not ruin your chances, but repeated errors can make recruiters question your attention to detail, professionalism, and preparation.

Many Canadian employers will not reject a resume only because it uses American spelling, but consistency matters. If your resume switches between Canadian and American spelling, it can look copied from different sources or poorly reviewed. For applications in Canada, use Canadian English settings and keep spelling consistent.

Usually, an ATS does not automatically reject a resume because of one typo. The bigger issue is searchability. If you misspell important keywords, job titles, software, or certifications, recruiters may have a harder time finding your resume when searching the applicant database.

The worst spelling mistakes are the ones connected to hiring value. These include misspelled job titles, employer names, technical skills, software tools, certifications, education credentials, and words related to communication or attention to detail.

Yes, but do not trust them blindly. AI and grammar tools can catch errors, but they may also change your wording too much, use American spelling, or make your resume sound unnatural. Use them for support, then review the final version yourself.

If the typo is serious, such as a wrong phone number, misspelled job title, incorrect company name, or major error in your qualifications, it may be worth resubmitting or sending a corrected version if the application system allows it. If it is one tiny typo in a less important line, do not panic. Focus on submitting a stronger version for future applications.

Resume Spelling Mistakes That Quietly Cost Interviews

Learn which resume spelling mistakes hurt your chances, how recruiters read them, and how to catch errors before applying in Canada.

Resume spelling mistakes matter because they create doubt before a recruiter has even evaluated your experience properly. In the Canadian job market, where employers often review dozens or hundreds of applications for one role, spelling errors can make a strong candidate look careless, rushed, or less detail oriented than the job requires. One typo will not always destroy your chances, but repeated mistakes, misspelled job titles, incorrect company names, inconsistent Canadian spelling, or errors in key skills can absolutely push your resume lower in the pile. What frustrates me most is that many candidates lose interviews not because they lack ability, but because their resume gives the wrong impression in the first ten seconds.

Why Resume Spelling Mistakes Matter More Than Candidates Think

Candidates often think recruiters read resumes with patience and generosity. Sometimes we do. More often, we are screening quickly, comparing similar applicants, and looking for reasons to move someone forward or out.

That sounds harsh, but it is how hiring works in practice.

A spelling mistake on a resume is rarely judged only as a spelling mistake. It becomes a signal. The recruiter or hiring manager starts quietly asking:

  • •

Did this person rush the application?

  • •

Do they pay attention to detail?

  • •

Would this mistake show up in client emails, reports, documentation, or internal communication?

  • •

Is this resume customized, or did they mass apply?

  • •

If they did not proofread the document representing their own career, what else might they miss?

That last one is the uncomfortable part. A resume is not a casual note to a friend. It is a professional document designed to persuade someone to invest time in you. When it contains obvious spelling errors, the concern is not grammar perfection. The concern is judgement.

The Real Problem Is Not One Typo, It Is Broken Trust

One minor typo in a long resume is not always fatal. Recruiters are human. Hiring managers are human. We all know mistakes happen.

The real problem starts when spelling mistakes damage trust in the rest of the resume.

If I see “manger” instead of “manager,” I might move on quickly. If I see “manger” three times, plus inconsistent dates, plus a misspelled company name, plus “costumer service” instead of “customer service,” now I am not only looking at spelling. I am questioning the candidate’s attention to the entire document.

That is where candidates underestimate the impact.

A resume is a credibility document. Every line is asking the employer to believe something about you. You increased revenue. You managed stakeholders. You improved reporting accuracy. You supported senior leadership. You led projects. You handled confidential information.

Then the resume says “detail orientated” instead of “detail oriented.”

That contradiction matters.

This is why spelling mistakes hurt more in resumes than they do in ordinary writing. The resume is supposed to show professional judgement. When it contains avoidable errors, the reader starts wondering whether the claims are as polished as the formatting.

Resume Spelling Mistakes Recruiters Notice Fast

Some spelling mistakes are small. Others jump off the page because they appear in places recruiters scan first.

Mistakes in your name, contact details, or LinkedIn URL

This is rare, but I have seen it. A candidate misspells their own email address, includes a broken LinkedIn link, or uses two different spellings of their name across the resume and application form.

That creates immediate friction.

Recruiters are not going to investigate like detectives unless the candidate is exceptionally strong. If your contact information is wrong, you may simply never hear back.

Check:

  • •

    Your full name

  • •

    Email address

  • •

    Phone number

  • •

    LinkedIn URL

  • •

    City and province

Canadian Spelling Matters More Than People Realize

Canadian English sits in an awkward place because many tools default to American spelling. That means your resume may look “correct” to spell check while still feeling slightly off for a Canadian audience.

This does not mean every employer will care deeply about Canadian spelling. Many will not. But consistency matters. A resume that switches between Canadian and American spelling can look copied, patched together, or not carefully reviewed.

Common Canadian spellings include:

  • •

    Centre, not center

  • •

    Labour, not labor

  • •

    Honour, not honor

  • •

    Behaviour, not behavior

  • •

Organize or organise can appear depending on style, but organize is common in Canadian business writing

  • •

Recognize is common in Canadian business writing

The Resume Areas Where Spelling Mistakes Hurt Most

Not every spelling error carries the same weight. Recruiters read resumes in layers. The most visible sections create the strongest impression.

Professional summary

Your professional summary is often the first written section a recruiter reads. If it contains mistakes, the resume starts weak.

The summary should be concise, specific, and clean. Avoid stuffing it with buzzwords, because the more inflated the language becomes, the more obvious mistakes feel.

Weak Example

Detail orientated administratve professional with strong comunication skills and experiance supporting executives.

Good Example

Detail oriented administrative professional with experience supporting executives, coordinating schedules, preparing reports, and managing confidential information.

The stronger version does more than correct spelling. It replaces vague claims with useful context.

Work experience bullets

Spelling mistakes in work experience are especially costly because this is where recruiters evaluate evidence.

A typo in a bullet point can distract from a strong achievement. Worse, it can make a measurable result feel less reliable.

Weak Example

Managed costumer inquires and resolved escalatons within company standerds.

Good Example

Managed customer inquiries and resolved escalations within company standards.

What Recruiters Actually Think When They See Resume Typos

Recruiters do not all react the same way. Context matters.

If you are applying for a warehouse associate role and there is one small typo in a two page resume with strong relevant experience, many recruiters will not care much. If you are applying for an executive assistant role and your resume says “calender management,” that is a bigger problem because calendar management is part of the job.

Here is the practical recruiter logic:

  • •

If the role requires writing, errors matter more

  • •

If the role requires documentation, errors matter more

  • •

If the role requires client communication, errors matter more

  • •

If the role requires compliance or accuracy, errors matter more

  • •

If the resume claims strong attention to detail, errors matter more

  • •

If the candidate pool is competitive, errors matter more

ATS, Keywords, and Why Spelling Mistakes Can Affect Resume Screening

Candidates sometimes misunderstand applicant tracking systems. An ATS is not a magical robot rejecting everyone because of one typo. That is not how most recruiting systems work.

But spelling still matters.

An ATS stores, parses, and helps recruiters search applications. If your resume has misspelled keywords, your profile may be harder to find in database searches. If a recruiter searches “project coordinator” and your resume says “project cordinator,” you have made your own resume less searchable.

The same applies to tools, certifications, job titles, and technical skills.

For example, a recruiter searching for candidates with “bilingual customer service” may not find a resume that says “bilngual costumer service” as reliably. Even if the system catches some variation, why risk it?

Here is the hiring reality: recruiters are not always reviewing every resume from top to bottom. Sometimes they are searching within hundreds or thousands of profiles. Your spelling affects whether your resume appears cleanly in that search environment.

This is especially relevant in Canada for high volume roles, government adjacent hiring, corporate recruitment, staffing agencies, healthcare administration, finance, tech, and operations roles where keyword search is common.

The practical rule is simple: spell the language of the job posting correctly. Use the employer’s terminology when it matches your experience.

What To Do Before Submitting Your Resume

Most resume spelling mistakes happen because candidates edit the document too many times, too quickly. The resume becomes familiar. Your brain reads what it expects to see, not what is actually on the page.

That is why proofreading needs a process, not just a quick glance.

Change the format before proofreading

Read your resume in a different format from the one you used to write it. If you wrote it in Word, save it as a PDF and review the PDF. If you wrote it on a laptop, review it on a tablet or print it.

A different format forces your brain to slow down.

This is also useful because formatting shifts can reveal errors hiding in headings, spacing, bullet alignment, and contact details.

Read from the bottom up

Start with the last line of your resume and read upward. This breaks the natural flow and helps you catch spelling errors instead of getting distracted by meaning.

It feels strange. It works.

Check proper nouns separately

Proper nouns are where software often fails.

Create a quick manual check for:

  • •

    Company names

  • •

When A Spelling Mistake Will Not Ruin Your Chances

Let’s be fair. A spelling mistake does not automatically mean you are out.

A strong candidate can still get an interview with a minor typo if the experience is highly relevant, the role is hard to fill, or the mistake is not connected to a core job requirement.

Recruiters weigh the whole picture.

A typo matters less when:

  • •

The role does not depend heavily on written communication

  • •

The candidate has rare or highly relevant experience

  • •

The mistake is minor and isolated

  • •

The resume is otherwise clear and credible

  • •

The labour market for that role is tight

  • •

    The candidate was referred internally

A typo matters more when:

What Resume Spelling Mistakes Reveal Beyond Language

Spelling errors often reveal deeper resume problems.

When I see repeated mistakes, I usually also see one or more of these issues:

  • •

    The resume was rushed

  • •

The candidate reused an old version

  • •

The resume was edited too many times without a final review

  • •

The candidate copied language from different templates

  • •

The resume was translated too literally

  • •

The candidate relied completely on software

  • •

The candidate did not customize the resume for the role

  • •

The Best Way To Fix Resume Spelling Mistakes Without Over Editing

The goal is not to make your resume sound academic. The goal is to make it accurate, clear, and credible.

Here is the best approach:

  • •

    Review spelling first

  • •

    Review grammar second

  • •

    Review clarity third

  • •

    Review keywords fourth

  • •

    Review formatting last

Most candidates do this backwards. They spend an hour adjusting margins, fonts, lines, and spacing, then send a resume with “buisness development” in the summary.

Do not decorate the house while the front door is falling off.

Fix the words first.

When reviewing, pay special attention to the words that carry hiring value. These include job titles, achievements, tools, metrics, industries, certifications, and role specific responsibilities. A typo in a low value phrase is annoying. A typo in a high value keyword can affect both credibility and searchability.

Final Thoughts: Spelling Mistakes Are Small, But Hiring Is Comparative

Resume spelling mistakes are not about perfectionism. They are about trust.

A recruiter is trying to answer a practical question: should this person move forward in the hiring process? Your resume either makes that decision easier or harder.

When spelling mistakes appear in visible places, they create friction. They slow the reader down. They make the candidate seem less prepared. They can weaken ATS keyword matching. They can distract from strong experience. And in a competitive Canadian job market, small doubts can matter because hiring decisions are often made between candidates who are all somewhat qualified.

That is the part many job seekers miss. You are not trying to submit a resume that is “probably fine.” You are trying to submit a resume that gives the employer fewer reasons to hesitate.

A clean resume will not guarantee an interview. But a careless one can absolutely cost you one.

Create Resume

In Canada, this matters across many roles, but especially in jobs involving communication, administration, finance, healthcare, operations, legal support, customer service, leadership, project coordination, sales, marketing, HR, and any role where documentation matters. Employers may not say, “We rejected this candidate because of typos.” They will usually say something softer, like, “The resume did not feel polished,” or “We had stronger candidates.”

That is recruiter language for: the resume created doubt.

•

Portfolio or website links

  • •

    File name of the resume

  • A resume file called “Final Resumee Updated Real Final 2” does not inspire confidence. I say this with affection, but also with recruiter pain.

    Misspelled job titles

Job titles are one of the first things recruiters scan. If your job title is misspelled, the error feels more serious because it affects your professional identity.

    Weak Example

    Marketing Manger

    Good Example

    Marketing Manager

This matters for both human readers and applicant tracking systems. An ATS may still parse the resume, but keyword matching can become weaker when important role titles are misspelled. More importantly, the recruiter sees the error exactly where their eyes naturally land.

    Common job title mistakes include:

    • •

      Manger instead of manager

    • •

      Cordinator instead of coordinator

    • •

      Adminstrator instead of administrator

    • •

      Representitive instead of representative

    • •

      Analysist instead of analyst

    • •

      Assitant instead of assistant

    • •

      Supervior instead of supervisor

If you only proofread one part of your resume carefully, proofread your job titles.

    Misspelled company names

This one is more damaging than candidates realize.

If you misspell your current or previous employer’s name, it raises questions about accuracy. If you misspell the company you are applying to in your resume, cover letter, or application email, it looks careless.

Hiring managers notice this because company names are personal to them. They may forgive a small typo in a bullet point, but spelling their organization’s name incorrectly feels like you did not care enough to check.

    Before applying, verify:

    • •

The employer’s legal or public brand name

    • •

      Capitalization

    • •

      Acronyms

    • •

      Spacing

    • •

      Special characters

    • •

      Canadian branch names where relevant

For example, if a company uses “RBC” publicly, do not randomly write “Royal Bank Canada” unless that is accurate in context. If an organization uses “TELUS,” do not write “Telus” throughout without checking its preferred brand style. This may seem small, but polished resumes are built from small signals.

Errors in core skills and keywords

This is where spelling mistakes can quietly hurt your search visibility.

Recruiters often search resumes using role specific keywords. Hiring teams may also rely on ATS filters or keyword matching. If you misspell a core skill, certification, software, or industry term, your resume may not surface as strongly.

    Examples include:

    • •

      Salesforce

    • •

      QuickBooks

    • •

      Microsoft Excel

    • •

      Power BI

    • •

      AutoCAD

    • •

      Workday

    • •

      SAP

    • •

      Google Analytics

    • •

      CPR

    • •

      CPA

    • •

      PMP

    • •

      WHMIS

    • •

      Bilingual

    • •

      Payroll

    • •

      Reconciliation

    • •

      Stakeholder

    • •

      Compliance

    • •

      Procurement

    • •

      Onboarding

In Canadian hiring, certifications and regulated terminology can matter. If you work in finance, healthcare, skilled trades, education, construction, HR, or technical fields, accuracy is not cosmetic. It affects whether the employer understands your qualifications.

    Weak Example

Experience with payrol, reconcilation, and complaince reporting.

    Good Example

Experience with payroll, reconciliation, and compliance reporting.

The good version does not just look cleaner. It makes the candidate easier to match to the role.

    •

Program is standard in Canadian English for most business contexts

The point is not to become dramatic about spelling variants. The point is to avoid looking inconsistent.

For Canadian resumes, I usually recommend choosing a Canadian English setting in your writing tools, then keeping your spelling consistent across the document. If you are applying to Canadian employers, your resume should feel like it belongs in the Canadian job market, not like it was copied from five templates from five countries.

The corrected version is simple, but it reads like someone who can communicate professionally. That matters.

    Skills section

A skills section with spelling errors looks sloppy because it is usually short. When a section has only fifteen words and two are wrong, the mistakes feel larger.

Do not rely on spell check alone here. Many tools will not catch industry terms, software names, acronyms, or certification names properly.

Check every skill against the job posting. If the employer writes “Power BI,” do not write “PowerBi.” If they write “accounts payable,” do not write “account payables” unless that phrasing accurately reflects your role.

    Education and certifications

Misspelling a school, credential, designation, or certification can create unnecessary doubt.

This is especially important in Canada when credentials may be reviewed carefully for regulated professions, government roles, healthcare positions, finance jobs, engineering roles, trades, education, and immigration related employment documentation.

    Check:

    • •

      Degree names

    • •

      Diploma names

    • •

      Institution names

    • •

      Certification titles

    • •

      Provincial designations

    • •

      Professional associations

    • •

      Licence numbers if included

The more formal the credential, the less room there is for casual spelling.

That last point is important. In a weak candidate pool, a recruiter may overlook small mistakes because the experience is hard to find. In a strong candidate pool, spelling mistakes become an easy differentiator.

This is not always fair, but hiring is comparative. You are rarely evaluated in isolation. You are evaluated beside other people who may have similar experience and cleaner presentation.

When employers say, “We are looking for someone polished,” they often mean more than appearance or interview style. They mean communication, judgement, preparation, and the ability to represent the company well.

Your resume is the first proof of that.

Lead instead of led when referring to past tense

  • •

    There instead of their

  • •

    Affect instead of effect

  • •

    Principle instead of principal

  • •

    Stationary instead of stationery

  • •

    Compliment instead of complement

  • •

Ensure instead of insure when meaning to make certain

  • •

    Loose instead of lose

  • •

    Personal instead of personnel

  • The dangerous thing about these errors is that spell check may not flag them because they are real words. That is why proofreading only with software is not enough.

    Weak Example

Lead a team of five customer service agents.

    Good Example

Led a team of five customer service agents.

This is one of the most common resume errors I see. “Lead” is present tense. “Led” is past tense. If the job happened in the past, use “led.”

A recruiter may still understand what you mean, but understanding is not the only issue. The issue is whether your writing feels professional enough for the role.

    Job titles

  • •

    Software names

  • •

    Certifications

  • •

    Schools

  • •

    Locations

  • •

    Hiring manager names if included

  • •

    Industry terms

  • •

    Professional associations

  • If a proper noun is wrong, it looks worse than a normal typo because it suggests you did not verify the basics.

Compare your resume against the job posting

This is not only for keywords. It is for accuracy.

Look at the job posting and compare important terms. If the posting says “client relationship management,” do not write “client relation management” unless that is genuinely the phrase you use elsewhere. If the posting says “inventory control,” do not write “inventry control.”

This step helps your resume align with both recruiter expectations and search behaviour.

Use tools, but do not outsource your judgement

Spell check, grammar tools, and AI tools can help. They can also introduce awkward phrasing, incorrect corrections, or American spelling when you need Canadian English.

Use tools as a second set of eyes, not as the final authority.

I see many resumes that are technically “corrected” but now sound unnatural, inflated, or strangely robotic. That is not better. A resume should be clean, accurate, and human. Not polished into plastic.

    • •

      The resume has multiple mistakes

    • •

The role requires writing, reporting, documentation, or client communication

    • •

The candidate claims attention to detail

    • •

The mistake appears in a job title, company name, credential, or skill

    • •

      The candidate pool is strong

    • •

The resume already feels generic or weak

This is why generic advice like “one typo means rejection” is too simplistic. Hiring is not that neat. But it is also why dismissing spelling mistakes as “not a big deal” is risky.

The honest answer is this: spelling mistakes may not always reject you, but they rarely help you. In a competitive Canadian hiring process, that is enough reason to remove them.

The candidate focused on design before content quality

This is where the spelling mistake is just the visible symptom.

A clean resume shows control. It tells the recruiter that the candidate has reviewed the document, understands the role, and can present information clearly. That does not mean the resume needs to be fancy. In fact, some of the strongest resumes I see are plain, simple, and extremely clear.

The weaker ones often try to compensate with design, buzzwords, or dramatic summaries while basic errors remain untouched.

Hiring managers are not impressed by a colourful resume if the word “management” is spelled wrong.

  • •

    Are Canadian spellings used consistently?

  • •

Are past tense verbs correct, especially led, managed, developed, supported, coordinated, and improved?

  • •

Are commonly confused words checked, such as role and roll, led and lead, their and there?

  • •

    Are all headings spelled correctly?

  • •

Are bullet points free from obvious typos?

  • •

Have you reviewed the PDF version before submitting?

  • •

Have you checked the file name?

  • •

Have you read the resume out loud or from bottom to top?

  • •

Have you compared key wording against the job posting?

  • •

Have you removed accidental double spaces, repeated words, and unfinished edits?

  • That final point matters. Many resumes contain leftover fragments from previous edits. A bullet starts in one direction, then ends in another. A sentence repeats the same word twice. A heading says “Professional Experience” while another says “Work Experiance.”

Those mistakes are preventable. Preventable mistakes are the ones that bother employers most.

Also, be careful with AI rewritten resumes. AI can help clean up wording, but it can also create phrases you would never naturally use. If your resume starts sounding like a corporate brochure written by a committee that has never met you, pull it back.

Canadian employers generally respond well to resumes that are clear, direct, relevant, and professionally written. You do not need theatrical language. You need clean evidence.
