Create ResumeIf you’re searching for “consultant doctor UK salary,” you’re not just looking for NHS pay bands. You’re trying to understand total earning potential, how consultants actually make money, and what separates a £93K NHS consultant from one earning £300K+ annually.
This guide explains the full reality: NHS salary structure, private income, recruiter and trust hiring behaviour, and how doctors strategically maximise earnings in the UK.
At a baseline level (NHS):
However, this number alone is misleading.
Real consultant doctor earnings depend on:
NHS base salary
Years at consultant level
Clinical Excellence Awards
Private practice income
Speciality demand
Location and trust funding
Total earnings often range:
£100,000 to £180,000 (NHS-focused consultants)
£150,000 to £300,000+ (mixed NHS + private work)
£300,000+ (high-demand specialities with strong private practice)
Unlike corporate roles, consultant pay follows a structured progression.
Year 1: £93,666
Year 5: ~£105,000
Year 10+: £120,000 to £126,281
Progression is based on:
Time in role
Performance
Contracted Programmed Activities (PAs)
Consultants are contracted in PAs:
1 PA = 4 hours of work
Standard contract = 10 PAs (40 hours/week)
Additional PAs:
Paid extra
Often used for waiting list reduction work
Can significantly increase earnings
Additional NHS income based on:
Clinical impact
Research contribution
Leadership
Awards range:
Reality: These are competitive and not guaranteed.

Dermatology: £150K to £300K+
Psychiatry: £120K to £250K+
General Medicine: £100K to £200K
