FAQ
If you're searching for “network engineer salary,” you’re not just looking for numbers. You’re trying to understand what you’re actually worth in today’s market, how to increase it, and what separates a $75K engineer from a $180K one.
Here’s the reality: salary in networking is not determined by job title alone. It’s driven by positioning, specialization, business impact, and how clearly your experience translates into operational value.
This guide breaks down:
Real salary ranges across the US market
How recruiters and hiring managers determine your pay
Why most candidates undervalue themselves
How to strategically increase your compensation
Let’s start with the actual numbers recruiters are working with right now.
Entry-level network engineer: $65,000 – $90,000
Mid-level network engineer: $90,000 – $120,000
Senior network engineer: $120,000 – $155,000
Lead / Principal network engineer: $150,000 – $185,000+
Cloud networking engineers: $140,000 – $190,000
Network security engineers: $130,000 – $180,000
FAANG / Big Tech roles: $160,000 – $250,000 total comp
Contract roles: $80 – $140 per hour
These ranges shift significantly based on how your experience is positioned, not just years of experience.
Most salary articles stop at averages. That’s useless if you want to increase your income.
Here’s how hiring actually works.
Hiring managers don’t pay for what you know. They pay for what you’ve improved, fixed, scaled, or secured.
Did you reduce downtime?
Did you improve network performance?
Did you lead infrastructure migrations?
Did you prevent outages or security incidents?
Weak Example:
“Managed network infrastructure for enterprise environment.”
Good Example:
“Redesigned enterprise network architecture, reducing downtime by 42% and improving latency across 12 global offices.”
That difference alone can be worth $20K–$40K.
Generalist network engineers earn less than specialists.
High-paying specializations:
Cloud networking (AWS, Azure, GCP)
Network automation (Python, Ansible)
SD-WAN and modern architecture
Network security (Zero Trust, firewalls, segmentation)
If your resume reads like “I configure routers and switches,” you’re competing at the lower end of the salary band.
Salary scales with complexity.
Small business network: lower pay
Enterprise (multi-region): higher pay
High-availability systems: premium pay
Regulated industries (finance, healthcare): premium
Recruiters immediately assess this from your resume.
Certifications help, but they don’t carry salary alone.
Impact ranking:
CCNP / CCIE + real projects = high salary
Certification without application = low impact
Hiring managers look for implementation, not theory.
Range: $65,000 – $90,000
Typical profile:
0–2 years experience
Basic networking knowledge
Certifications like CCNA
What limits salary:
Lack of real-world projects
No measurable outcomes
What increases salary:
Internship with real infrastructure work
Hands-on labs with documented results
Range: $90,000 – $120,000
Typical profile:
3–6 years experience
Works independently
Supports production systems
Salary drivers:
Exposure to enterprise environments
Ownership of systems
Troubleshooting complexity
Range: $120,000 – $155,000
Typical profile:
7–12 years experience
Designs systems, not just maintains
Leads projects
What separates high earners:
Architecture-level thinking
Business alignment
Mentoring junior engineers
Range: $150,000 – $185,000+
Typical profile:
Strategic ownership
Cross-team influence
Budget and vendor decisions
At this level, you're no longer “doing networking.” You're driving infrastructure strategy.
Location still matters, but less than before due to remote work.
San Francisco: $140K – $190K
New York: $130K – $180K
Seattle: $130K – $175K
Austin: $115K – $155K
Typically align with mid-tier salary bands
High-end remote roles still compete nationally
Understanding adjacent roles helps you reposition for higher pay.
Security engineers earn 10–25% more
Driven by demand and risk impact
Cloud engineers earn 20–40% more
Due to scalability and modern architecture
DevOps roles often exceed $150K
Due to automation and infrastructure-as-code
Most network engineers plateau around $110K–$130K.
Why?
They stay operational instead of strategic
They don’t quantify impact
Their resume reads like tasks, not outcomes
To break this ceiling, you must reposition yourself.
Recruiters scan resumes in 6–8 seconds.
They look for:
Scale
Results
Ownership
Focus on:
Cloud networking
Automation
Security integration
These are not optional anymore. They are salary multipliers.
Your resume determines your salary range before you even speak to a recruiter.

If your resume has no numbers, your salary will reflect that.
Generic engineers get generic salaries.
When I review a network engineer resume, I instantly assess:
Scale of systems
Complexity of environment
Business impact
Specialization level
If those signals aren’t clear, the candidate gets placed in a lower salary band automatically.
To break into top-tier compensation:
Architecture ownership
Cross-functional collaboration
Measurable business impact
Pure support roles
Task-based descriptions
Lack of strategic involvement
Engineers who don’t adapt will see stagnant salaries.
Manual configuration = lower salary ceiling.
Networking + security = premium compensation.
Ask for average salary
Undersell your experience
Anchor salary based on impact
Reference market demand
Position yourself as a solution, not a resource
