Create ResumeIf you’re searching for “security guard salary,” you’re not just trying to find a number. You’re trying to understand how much you can realistically earn, what affects your pay, and how to move beyond entry-level wages.
This guide breaks down the real salary landscape, how recruiters and employers actually determine pay, and what separates low-paid guards from high-earning security professionals.
Security guard salaries vary significantly depending on location, risk level, employer type, and certifications.
Typical US salary ranges:
Entry-level (0–2 years): $30,000 – $40,000
Mid-level (3–5 years): $40,000 – $55,000
Experienced (5–10 years): $50,000 – $70,000
Armed / Specialized security: $60,000 – $90,000+
Supervisors / Site Managers: $65,000 – $100,000+
Hourly rates:
Standard guards: $14 – $22/hour
Armed guards: $20 – $35/hour
High-risk / federal contracts: $30 – $50+/hour
Key Insight:
Security is one of the most stratified job markets. Two people with the same job title can earn dramatically different salaries based on risk exposure, responsibility, and certifications.
From a recruiter and hiring manager perspective, salary isn’t based on “years of experience” alone.
It’s based on three key factors:
Low-risk roles:
Retail stores
Office buildings
Residential complexes
Higher-risk roles:
Armed transport
Government facilities
Critical infrastructure
Higher risk = higher pay.
Security guards who are responsible for:
Access control systems
Emergency response
Incident reporting
Asset protection
Earn more than guards who primarily observe and report.
Unlicensed guard:
Lower pay
Limited responsibilities
Licensed / certified guard:
Higher pay
More responsibility
Special certifications (firearms, federal clearance) significantly increase salary potential.
Typical roles include retail, corporate offices, and events.
Higher pay due to increased risk and training requirements.
Better benefits and stability compared to contract roles.
Includes roles in federal buildings and defense-related sites.
High-end niche requiring experience, discretion, and advanced training.
Responsible for teams, operations, and site management.
Key Insight:
The biggest salary jumps happen when you move from “presence-based security” to “risk-based security.”
From a recruiter’s perspective, many candidates plateau because they remain interchangeable.
No certifications beyond minimum requirements
Limited responsibility in previous roles
No progression into higher-risk environments
Resume lacks measurable contributions
If your resume says:
“Monitored premises and ensured safety”
You are seen as entry-level, regardless of years worked.
Higher pay comes from:
Armed roles
High-security environments
Government or critical infrastructure
Examples:
Firearms certification
CPR / First Aid
Security licenses
Specialized training (executive protection, surveillance)
Instead of:
“Patrolled building”
They position as:
“Managed access control and responded to incidents, reducing security breaches by X%”
Lower pay
Limited benefits
High turnover
Higher pay
Better benefits
More stability
Highest stability
Structured pay scales
Strong benefits
Key Insight:
The same guard can earn 20%–40% more simply by moving from contract work to in-house or government roles.
This is the fastest way to increase pay.
Examples:
Banks
Airports
Government facilities
This alone can increase hourly rate by $5–$15+.
Even small steps matter:
Training new guards
Managing shifts
Reporting incidents
Weak positioning:
“Ensured safety and security”
Strong positioning:
“Maintained secure access control for facility with 500+ daily visitors, reducing unauthorized entries”

Because armed roles involve higher legal responsibility, risk exposure, and training requirements. Employers pay for reduced liability and the ability to respond to serious threats.
Government roles typically offer structured pay scales, better benefits, and higher job security, often resulting in higher long-term earnings than private contract roles.
Yes. Many security roles rely heavily on overtime and shift differentials, which can increase total earnings by 20%–50% annually.
Executive protection involves personal safety for high-profile individuals, requiring advanced skills and discretion, which commands significantly higher compensation.
Certifications are one of the strongest salary drivers. Guards with advanced certifications can earn substantially more because they qualify for higher-risk, higher-responsibility roles.
