So when you message a recruiter, you are entering their workflow. That does not mean you should be scared to message them. It means your message needs to respect how recruiters think.
In the Singapore job market, LinkedIn is heavily used for professional hiring, especially for corporate, tech, finance, sales, marketing, HR, operations, supply chain, legal, consulting, and senior support roles. Recruiters use LinkedIn to source candidates, check career patterns, compare profiles, and quickly judge whether someone may fit a client or internal vacancy.

This is weak because it gives no job title, no industry, no experience level, no location, and no direction. The recruiter cannot do anything meaningful with it.

Hi [Name], I am a finance executive with four years of experience in reporting, month end closing, and audit coordination. I am exploring senior finance executive roles in Singapore and noticed you recruit for finance positions. Would be happy to connect if my profile is relevant.
This is much stronger because it gives the recruiter something to work with.
Weak Example
Dear Sir or Madam, I am interested in any suitable opportunity in your esteemed organisation.
This sounds outdated, generic, and disconnected from how LinkedIn actually works. Also, many recruiters are not hiring for their own organisation. Agency recruiters hire for clients. Internal recruiters hire for specific business units. “Any suitable opportunity” usually means “I have not thought carefully about my positioning.”

Hi [Name], I noticed your recruitment work focuses on commercial and marketing roles. I am currently in brand marketing within FMCG and am exploring assistant brand manager or brand manager opportunities in Singapore. Would be glad to connect if relevant.
Personalisation does not mean writing a dramatic paragraph about how inspired you are by the recruiter’s LinkedIn profile. Please do not do that. Most recruiters will immediately know it is fake.
Good personalisation is practical. It shows that you contacted this person for a reason.
You can personalise by mentioning:
The type of roles they recruit for
A job post they shared
Their recruitment specialisation
A company they represent
A market they cover
A mutual industry connection
A recent hiring post they published
Your first message should usually be around three to six short sentences.
Too short, and it looks lazy. Too long, and the recruiter may not read it.
A recruiter message should not include your entire employment history. Your LinkedIn profile already carries that. Your message should frame your relevance.
Think of the message as a label on a file. It helps the recruiter understand where to place you.

That is the standard.
Timing matters, but not in the magical way people think.
There is no perfect hour where recruiters suddenly become generous and emotionally available to answer every LinkedIn message. But there are better moments to reach out.
Good times to message a recruiter include:
After they post a relevant job
After you apply for a role they appear connected to
When they share hiring activity in your field
When you are starting a planned job search
When your notice period, salary expectations, and target roles are clear
After they view your profile
If the recruiter allows direct messages, you can message directly. If not, send a connection request with a short note.
Your connection request should not be too long. LinkedIn gives limited space anyway, which is probably a blessing for everyone.

If they accept, you can follow up with a slightly fuller message.
Do not send a blank connection request and then immediately drop a long resume pitch the moment they accept. It feels transactional in the worst way.
A better sequence is:
Send a relevant connection request
Wait for acceptance
Send a short, specific message
Offer your resume only if relevant
Follow up once if there is no reply
Following up is fine. Chasing every two days is not.
A good follow up shows professionalism. A bad follow up makes the recruiter wonder what you will be like during interview scheduling.
In Singapore hiring, speed matters, but so does judgement. Recruiters are often managing many candidates across several roles. A delayed reply does not always mean rejection. It can mean the role is paused, the hiring manager is slow, the salary range changed, another candidate is ahead, or the recruiter simply has no suitable opening right now.
Follow up after five to seven business days if your message was about a specific role. If it was a general networking message, wait about one to two weeks.

That is not follow up. That is a hostage situation in chat format.
If there is still no reply after one follow up, move on. Continue applying, continue networking, and keep your profile active. One recruiter is not your whole job search strategy.
This is the part candidates often forget: when you message a recruiter, they will likely click your profile before replying.
Your message may be good, but if your profile is vague, outdated, or inconsistent, the recruiter may stop there.
Before messaging recruiters, check that your LinkedIn profile clearly shows:
Your current or most recent job title
Your industry
Your key skills
Your location or Singapore market relevance
Your career level
The type of work you actually do
Your employment dates
Career changers need to be even more specific because recruiters are naturally pattern driven.

That gives the recruiter no evidence, no angle, and no reason to continue.
For career changers, your recruiter message should show transferable value. Not passion. Not dreams. Value.
Passion may be lovely, but hiring managers do not build shortlists around passion alone. They build them around risk, relevance, capability, and whether they believe you can do the job without needing six months of rescue operations.
Fresh graduates and early career candidates often worry that they do not have enough experience to message recruiters. You can still message recruiters, but your positioning must be realistic.
Do not oversell yourself as a strategic leader if you have only done one internship. Recruiters can see through that immediately.
Instead, show clarity, learning ability, and relevant exposure.

You do not need to know your entire life plan. But you do need to narrow the conversation enough for someone to help you.
Senior candidates should message recruiters differently. At senior level, recruiters are not only checking skills. They are checking scope, leadership level, business impact, market credibility, and whether you fit the type of mandate they handle.
A senior recruiter message should be concise but commercially sharp.

Senior candidates should avoid sounding too passive or too vague.

At senior level, “suitable” needs definition. Suitable by what measure? Scope? Industry? Reporting line? Team size? Revenue responsibility? Region? Transformation mandate? Salary level?
The more senior you are, the more important positioning becomes.
Most ignored recruiter messages fail for predictable reasons.
The common mistakes are:
The message is too vague
The candidate has no clear target role
The message is obviously copy pasted
The recruiter does not recruit for that function
The LinkedIn profile is incomplete
The candidate asks the recruiter to do too much work
The message sounds desperate or demanding

This is why “Hi, I am looking for a job” is too weak. It gives the recruiter nothing useful to work with.
A recruiter is not thinking, “Let me spend ten minutes discovering this person’s entire career story.” They are thinking, “Can I place this person into anything I am currently handling, or should I keep them in mind for later?”
That is the real screening logic behind recruiter replies.
If your message makes that decision easier, you increase your chances. If your message creates more work, it gets ignored, not necessarily because the recruiter is rude, but because the message has no clear next step.
This works because it gives the recruiter enough information without making them read a mini autobiography.
It also does something many candidates forget: it respects relevance. You are not asking the recruiter to magically find you a job. You are asking whether your background fits their hiring space.

Avoid messages that lead with:

This may be honest, but it does not position you well. Recruiters are human, but they are also assessing fit, confidence, communication, and employability.

A simple personalised line is enough.

That is better than pretending you have followed their career journey since 2018. Nobody asked for a Netflix documentary.
After meeting them at an event, webinar, or referral conversation
A common mistake is waiting until you are completely desperate. By then, candidates often send rushed, emotional, unfocused messages. Recruiters can feel that pressure immediately.
The better approach is to build recruiter visibility before you urgently need help.
This does not mean messaging every recruiter every week. That is not networking. That is digital knocking on doors until someone hides behind the sofa.
It means making yourself findable, understandable, and relevant.
That is enough.
Your most relevant achievements or scope
Recruiters are not looking for perfection. They are looking for coherence.
If your message says you are targeting HR business partner roles, but your profile headline says “Open to exciting opportunities” and your experience section says almost nothing, the recruiter has to guess too much.
Guessing is bad for screening.
A useful LinkedIn headline is not necessarily fancy. It just needs to position you clearly.

This could describe almost anyone. It is also the LinkedIn equivalent of fog.
The candidate sends multiple follow ups too quickly
The message focuses on need instead of fit
The candidate has not applied for the role but asks for an update
The biggest misconception is that recruiters ignore messages because they do not care. Sometimes that is true. Recruiters are people, and some are better than others. But often, candidates are being ignored because their message gives the recruiter no useful reason to reply.
A recruiter reply usually needs one of these triggers:
A current role match
A possible future role match
A strong niche skill
A hard to find background
A clear salary and availability fit
A relevant referral or market connection
A profile worth saving
Your message should help create one of those triggers.
Here is a strong general version you can adapt:
