It needs to make the hiring manager think, “This person looks easy to train, easy to roster, and unlikely to disappear after two shifts.” That is the real hiring logic behind many part time roles, especially in retail, hospitality, administration, supermarkets, call centres, childcare support, warehousing, and entry level office jobs.
When someone applies for a part time job, employers are usually not reading the resume like they would for a senior corporate role. They are scanning for practical fit.
That sounds obvious, but it is where many candidates get it wrong. They write a resume as if the employer is deeply analysing their potential, personality, and long term career dreams. In reality, for many part time roles, the employer is often asking much simpler questions:
Can this person work the shifts I need covered?
Do they seem reliable?
Have they dealt with customers, pressure, routines, stock, tills, phones, admin tasks, food handling, or teamwork before?
Are they likely to learn quickly?
Will they turn up on time?
Is there anything confusing, vague, or risky in this application?
That last question matters more than candidates realise. Hiring managers are not only looking for reasons to interview you. They are also looking for reasons not to. Not because they are cruel, but because they may have 80 applications for one casual retail assistant role and five minutes between other tasks to shortlist.
The best resume format for a part time job in Australia is a clear reverse chronological resume with a short profile, key skills, availability, work experience, education, certifications, and referees available on request.
Keep it to one page if you are a student, school leaver, entry level candidate, or someone with limited experience. Two pages is fine if you have several relevant roles, but do not stretch it for the sake of looking more “professional”. A thin two page resume is not more impressive. It just gives the employer more empty space to notice.

For a part time job resume in Australia, clarity beats cleverness. A simple, clean resume that clearly shows your availability, skills, experience, education, and right to work will usually outperform a designed template that looks pretty but makes the important information hard to find.

You do not need to include your full address, date of birth, photo, marital status, religion, or personal details that do not help the employer decide whether to interview you. In Australia, a suburb and state can be useful if the role is location based, but your full street address is unnecessary.
For part time and casual jobs, availability is not a tiny detail. It can be the reason you get shortlisted or rejected.
If a café needs someone for weekday mornings and your resume does not mention availability, the hiring manager has to guess. Guessing creates friction. Friction gets resumes skipped.
Put your availability near the top, especially if the job ad mentions specific shifts.

The weak version sounds fine, but it is vague. “Flexible” can mean anything. To a hiring manager, vague availability often means “I will need to chase this person for basic roster information.” Nobody enjoys that little administrative treasure hunt.
Your resume summary should be short, specific, and grounded in what the employer needs. Do not write a dramatic career objective about wanting to grow, learn, and contribute to a dynamic team. I see versions of that constantly, and most of them say absolutely nothing.
A good summary for a part time job should mention your relevant strengths, the type of role you are targeting, and any useful experience or qualities.

Reliable Year 11 student seeking a part time retail role. Confident with customers, quick to learn routines, and available after school, weekends, and during school holidays. Brings volunteer experience from school events, strong communication skills, and a calm approach during busy periods.
Weak Example
Hardworking and motivated individual looking for an opportunity to gain experience and grow professionally.
The weak example is not terrible because it sounds bad. It is weak because it sounds like everyone. Hiring managers do not shortlist “motivated individuals”. They shortlist people who look suitable for the actual roster, workplace, and customer environment.
If you already have experience, make the summary more direct.
Good Example
Customer focused retail assistant with two years of part time experience across POS, stock replenishment, click and collect orders, returns, and front of store service. Known for reliability, calm communication, and strong weekend availability.
That tells me what you have done, where you fit, and why you may be useful quickly. That is what a resume summary should do.
Your work experience section should not read like a job description copied from the internet. It should show what you actually handled and what the employer can trust you with.
For each role, include:

Use short bullet points, but make them specific. For part time roles, the details matter. “Customer service” is broad. “Served customers during weekend rush periods, processed EFTPOS payments, handled returns, and restocked shelves” is much stronger.

This is the kind of resume writing that looks acceptable at first glance but gives the employer very little to work with. It tells me you had a job, but not what you were trusted to do.

The good example is not trying to sound impressive for the sake of it. It is useful because it gives evidence. Evidence is what makes a resume feel credible.
If you have no paid experience, your resume still needs to show employability. Employers are not expecting a school student or first job candidate to have a corporate work history. They are looking for signs that you can communicate, follow instructions, handle responsibility, and show up consistently.

Hiring is often behaviour prediction. Employers are trying to predict how you will act in their workplace based on what you have already done elsewhere.
The best skills for a part time job resume in Australia are skills that connect directly to the role. Do not fill your skills section with vague traits like “hardworking”, “friendly”, and “punctual” unless you can support them elsewhere in the resume.

This resume works because it does not pretend the candidate has years of experience. It takes what the candidate actually has and frames it through the employer’s lens: communication, reliability, availability, teamwork, customer contact, and ability to follow routines.
That is what many first job resumes are missing. They either apologise for having no experience or overinflate basic activities until they sound fake. Neither helps.

This example is stronger because it includes the practical details employers care about. It does not just say “worked in retail”. It shows the candidate can handle customers, transactions, stock, pace, systems, and basic responsibility.
Most part time resume mistakes are not dramatic. They are small things that create doubt.
“Flexible” sounds helpful, but it often creates more questions than answers. Be clear about when you can work.
Employers do not need a paragraph about your desire to gain valuable experience. They need to understand why you fit this role.
“Customer service” is too broad. Show the setting, pace, tools, and responsibility.
Your age, photo, full address, marital status, and personal background are usually unnecessary. Keep the resume focused on job fit.
Some resume templates look impressive until they hit an applicant tracking system or a busy manager’s phone screen. Columns, icons, graphics, text boxes, and tiny fonts can create problems. A clean Word or PDF resume is usually safer.
For some part time roles, certificates can move you up the shortlist quickly. RSA, food safety, First Aid, Working with Children Check, police check, forklift licence, white card, or driver licence can be very relevant depending on the job.
Gaps, unclear dates, vague availability, no contact details, inconsistent formatting, and sloppy spelling can all create the wrong impression. For part time jobs, reliability is a major hiring factor. Your resume needs to look like it came from someone who pays attention.
When I look at a part time resume, I am usually not reading every line in order. I am scanning for fit.
The first things that usually stand out are:

A hiring manager in a busy store, café, office, clinic, warehouse, or childcare centre is often doing the same thing. They are not sitting there lovingly admiring your font choice. They are trying to work out whether you can solve their staffing problem.
That is the part candidates often miss. A job ad is not just an opportunity for you. It is also a problem for the employer. They need someone for specific shifts, tasks, customers, systems, and team gaps. Your resume should make the solution obvious.
If the job ad says weekend availability required, mention weekend availability. If it says experience with POS preferred, mention POS if you have it. If it says must have Working with Children Check, put it near the top if you have one.
This is not keyword stuffing. This is basic hiring communication.
You do not need to rewrite your entire resume for every part time job, but you should adjust the top sections and skills to match the role.

That is enough. Nobody needs three paragraphs about your lifelong passion for folding jumpers unless the jumper industry has become unexpectedly spiritual.
Most part time job resumes in Australia should be one page, especially for students, school leavers, first job applicants, and candidates with limited experience.
Use two pages only when you have enough relevant work history to justify it. If your second page contains one lonely section and a lot of white space, cut it back.
A strong one page resume can be more effective than a stretched two page resume because it respects the reader’s time. Hiring managers appreciate clarity. They may not say it out loud, but they absolutely notice when a resume gets to the point.
Before sending your part time job resume, check whether it answers the employer’s practical questions.
