That is what employers are really trying to figure out when they read your resume. They are not expecting a corporate career history from someone who has just finished school. What they are looking for is evidence of attitude, communication, punctuality, responsibility, and whether you can be trusted in a workplace without constant chasing.
The mistake many school leavers make is trying to sound more experienced than they are. That usually backfires. A good school leaver resume is honest, clear, organised, and specific. It shows your education, any casual work, volunteering, school achievements, extracurricular activities, skills, availability, and references in a way that makes hiring managers think, “This person seems sensible. I can work with this.”
When an employer reads a school leaver resume, they are usually not searching for a perfect candidate. They are searching for a safe hiring decision.
That sounds harsh, but it is true. Most entry level employers are trying to avoid the obvious problems first. They want someone who turns up, follows instructions, communicates properly, treats customers respectfully, learns quickly, and does not create unnecessary drama. The bar is not impossible, but it is also not as low as some candidates think.
For school leavers applying for casual jobs, apprenticeships, traineeships, retail roles, hospitality jobs, administration roles, childcare assistant roles, labouring roles, customer service positions, or entry level office jobs, employers usually assess the resume through a few practical questions:
Can this person communicate clearly?
Do they seem reliable?
Have they shown responsibility anywhere, even outside paid work?
Do they understand what kind of role they are applying for?
Have they made any effort to tailor the resume?
For most Australian school leavers, the best resume format is a simple reverse chronological resume with strong sections for education, skills, experience, volunteering, achievements, and availability.
You do not need a flashy design. You do not need graphics, photos, icons, coloured bars, or a resume that looks like a Canva poster. In fact, those often make the resume harder to read, especially if the employer uses an applicant tracking system or prints applications for review.
Use a clean structure like this:
Name and contact details
Resume summary
Key skills
Education
Work experience, volunteering, or school based experience
Achievements and activities
Is their availability clear?
Are they likely to present well in front of customers, team members, or supervisors?
Is there enough evidence to justify an interview?
This is why a school leaver resume should never be treated as “just a formality”. For many entry level roles, especially in Australia, the resume is the first signal of how seriously you take the opportunity.
I often see school leavers underestimate this. They write two lines, list their school, add “hardworking and motivated”, and assume that is enough because they are applying for junior jobs. But junior does not mean careless. Employers still compare applications. If ten candidates apply for the same retail assistant job and one resume is clear, specific, and professional while the others look rushed, guess who is more likely to get called?

This structure works because it answers the employer’s main questions quickly. They can see who you are, how to contact you, what you offer, what you have done, where you studied, when you are available, and whether someone can vouch for you.
A school leaver resume should usually be one page. Two pages can be acceptable if you have strong casual work experience, volunteering, certificates, leadership roles, or relevant achievements. But do not stretch it to two pages just to look more experienced. Empty space dressed up as content does not impress recruiters. It just makes the lack of substance more obvious.
A school leaver resume should include the information that helps an employer assess your work readiness. That does not mean listing every school subject, every personal interest, or every vague skill you can think of. It means choosing details that connect to employability.
Put your contact details at the top of the resume. Keep this section simple.
Include:
Full name
Mobile number
Professional email address
Suburb and state
LinkedIn profile only if it is relevant and professional
You do not need to include your full home address, date of birth, marital status, nationality, photo, or personal identification details. Australian employers do not need those details for a normal resume, and including too much personal information can make the resume look outdated.
Your email address matters more than many school leavers realise. If your email address looks like an inside joke from Year 8, create a new one. A simple firstname.lastname email is enough. Nobody is rejecting you because your email is boring. They might pause if it looks immature.
Your summary should be short, specific, and believable. This is not where you pretend to be a senior professional. It is where you show the employer what kind of entry level candidate you are.
A good school leaver resume summary should mention:
Your school leaver status
The type of work you are seeking
Your strongest practical qualities
Any relevant experience, volunteering, subjects, or interests
Your availability if it strengthens your application

Recent school leaver looking for a job. I am hardworking, reliable, and a fast learner. I work well independently and in a team.
This is not terrible, but it sounds like every other resume. It gives the employer no real evidence.
Good Example
Recent Year 12 graduate seeking an entry level retail or customer service role. Confident communicating with customers, handling busy environments, and learning new systems quickly. Completed school leadership activities and weekend volunteering, with strong availability across weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
This version works better because it gives the employer more context. It connects the candidate to the type of role, mentions relevant behaviours, and makes availability clear.
For a school leaver resume, education usually appears near the top because it is often your most recent and relevant background.

Qualification level such as Year 12, HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE, SACE, NTCET, TCE, or ACT Senior Secondary Certificate
Relevant subjects if they support the role
Awards, leadership roles, or achievements if useful
Do not list every subject unless it matters. If you are applying for an apprenticeship, technical subjects, maths, design technology, construction, automotive, engineering, or VET subjects may be useful. If you are applying for retail or hospitality, business studies, food technology, communication based subjects, or customer service related certificates may help.

The point is not to make school sound like a full career. The point is to extract the parts that show responsibility, communication, consistency, or role fit.
If you have had casual work, part time work, holiday work, work experience placement, babysitting, tutoring, sports coaching, family business support, market stall work, or volunteering, include it.
Many school leavers think experience only counts if it was a formal job with payslips. Employers are usually more flexible than that at entry level. They care about whether you have shown responsibility in a practical setting.
Useful experience can include:

The key is to describe the responsibilities properly. Do not just write “helped out”. Explain what you actually did.

The resume summary is where school leavers often either go too vague or try too hard. The best version sits in the middle. It should sound mature, but still real.
Avoid phrases like:
I am passionate about excellence
I thrive in dynamic environments
I am highly motivated and hardworking
I am seeking a challenging role where I can grow
There is nothing wrong with motivation, but these phrases are so overused that recruiters barely register them. They sound like filler because they do not prove anything.
A stronger school leaver summary uses specific signals:
What role you want
What environments you suit
What responsibilities you have already handled
What availability you offer
What practical strengths you bring
Good Example
Recent school leaver seeking a junior administration or reception role. Strong written communication, organised with school deadlines, and confident using Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. Known by teachers for reliability, attention to detail, and following through on tasks. Available full time and ready to learn office systems, phone handling, and customer service processes.
This is much better than “I am a fast learner” because it gives the employer something to picture.
A recruiter reads that and thinks, “This candidate may not have office experience yet, but they understand the environment and have some relevant foundations.”
That is the whole job of the summary.
The best skills for a school leaver resume are not random personality traits. They should be workplace relevant skills that match the role.
For retail, hospitality, customer service, and entry level office roles, useful skills include:

The mistake is listing skills without evidence. A resume that says “teamwork, communication, leadership, problem solving” with no supporting examples is weak. The employer sees the words, but not the proof.
Better resumes connect skills to something real.

Skills: teamwork, communication, leadership, organisation.
Good Example
Developed teamwork and communication skills through school netball, group assignments, and volunteering at community events where I assisted visitors, followed instructions, and worked with other volunteers during busy periods.
That second version gives the employer context. Context creates trust.
A school leaver with no paid work experience can still write a strong resume. The trick is to stop thinking of experience as only paid employment.
Employers know school leavers may not have had formal jobs yet. What they want is evidence that you have handled responsibility somewhere.
You can include:
School leadership roles
Sports teams
Volunteering
Work experience placement
Helping in a family business
Caring responsibilities
Tutoring siblings or younger students
Community events
School projects
Club involvement
Fundraising activities
Certificates or training
The key is to translate those activities into workplace language without exaggerating.

That tells the employer nothing useful.
Good Example
Although I have not yet held a formal paid role, I have developed strong communication, teamwork, and responsibility through school leadership activities, community volunteering, and regular babysitting for family friends. These experiences have helped me become reliable, organised, and confident following instructions in practical situations.
That is honest and much more useful.
For individual entries, write them like experience.

This kind of experience can absolutely belong on a school leaver resume when it shows relevant behaviours.
Recruiter reality: employers are not expecting you to have managed a team of twenty before finishing school. They are looking for early signs of work readiness. Show those signs clearly.
School leaver resumes often become weak because candidates include information that does not help the hiring decision.
Avoid including:
A photo unless specifically requested for a valid industry reason
Full home address
Date of birth
Personal identification numbers
Unprofessional email addresses
Long paragraphs about your personality
Fake sounding career objectives
Primary school details
Every subject you studied
Irrelevant hobbies with no workplace connection
Exaggerated skills you cannot explain in an interview
References without permission
Overdesigned templates that are hard to read
Also avoid claiming advanced skills unless you can back them up. If you write “advanced Excel” and the interviewer asks about formulas, pivot tables, or data cleaning, you will have created an awkward moment for yourself. It is much better to write “basic Microsoft Excel” if that is the truth.
This is one of the biggest resume lessons candidates learn too late: your resume is not just a marketing document. It is also an interview script. Anything you put on it can be questioned.
If you cannot explain it confidently, do not put it there.
Tailoring does not mean rewriting your entire resume every time. It means adjusting the details so the employer can quickly see why you fit that specific role.
A school leaver applying for a retail role should highlight customer service, presentation, availability, communication, and handling busy environments.
A school leaver applying for hospitality should highlight energy, teamwork, reliability, weekend availability, food safety, and comfort with fast paced work.
A school leaver applying for an apprenticeship should highlight practical subjects, hands on interests, safety awareness, early starts, reliability, and genuine interest in the trade.
A school leaver applying for administration should highlight organisation, written communication, computer skills, attention to detail, and professional phone manner if relevant.
This is where many candidates miss the obvious. They send the same resume to a café, a childcare centre, a warehouse, and an office traineeship. Then they wonder why nobody calls.
The resume might not be bad. It might just be too generic.
Employers do not want to do the work of interpreting your potential. They are busy. Make the connection for them.

Good Example for Retail
Recent school leaver seeking a retail assistant role where I can use my communication skills, positive attitude, and strong availability across evenings, weekends, and holidays. Comfortable helping customers, keeping displays organised, and learning point of sale systems.

Recent school leaver seeking an electrical apprenticeship. Completed relevant maths and technology subjects, enjoy practical hands on work, and understand the importance of safety, punctuality, and learning carefully from qualified tradespeople.
Same candidate, different positioning. That is how tailoring works.
Most school leaver resumes are screened quickly. That does not mean employers do not care. It means they are scanning for obvious signals.
For entry level roles, the first screen usually checks:
Location
Availability
Communication quality
Relevant experience or activities
Certificates if required
Presentation and professionalism
Signs of reliability
Whether the candidate followed application instructions
If the job requires weekend work and your resume does not mention weekend availability, you may lose out to someone who made it obvious. If the job is in hospitality and you have a food safety certificate but bury it at the bottom, you are making the employer work too hard.
The reality is simple: unclear resumes create doubt. Clear resumes reduce doubt.
Recruiters also notice effort. Not fake effort. Real effort. A resume that is clean, specific, and matched to the role tells me the candidate is likely to take the process seriously. A resume with spelling errors, messy formatting, vague statements, and no availability tells me the candidate may not understand workplace expectations yet.
That might sound strict, but hiring is risk assessment. Employers are not only asking, “Can this person do the job?” They are also asking, “Will hiring this person create more work for us?”
Your resume should answer that concern before they have to ask.
Use these bullet points as starting points, but adjust them to match what you have actually done. Do not copy anything that is not true. It is very easy for employers to spot when a school leaver resume has been inflated beyond reality.
For retail and customer service:
Assisted customers politely by answering basic questions, directing them to products, and maintaining a friendly attitude during busy periods
Restocked shelves, organised displays, and helped maintain a clean and presentable store environment
Learned basic point of sale tasks under supervision, including processing simple transactions and handling receipts
Supported team members by completing assigned tasks quickly and asking questions when unsure
For hospitality:
Assisted with basic food preparation, table clearing, cleaning tasks, and customer service during busy periods
Followed hygiene and safety procedures to help maintain a clean and organised work area
Communicated clearly with team members to keep service moving efficiently

For administration:
Used Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs, and email to complete school assignments and organise information accurately

Good bullet points do not need to sound dramatic. They need to sound credible.
The biggest school leaver resume mistakes are usually not complicated. They are basic issues that create doubt.
A vague resume says the candidate is hardworking, reliable, friendly, and motivated. A stronger resume shows where those qualities have appeared.
Instead of saying you are reliable, mention consistent attendance, regular babysitting, team sport commitment, volunteering, or part time responsibilities.
School leavers sometimes use language that sounds copied from executive resumes. Phrases like “strategic stakeholder engagement” do not belong on a school leaver resume unless you want the recruiter to quietly sigh into their coffee.
Use mature language, not inflated language.
For casual and entry level roles, availability can be one of the biggest hiring factors. If you can work weekends, evenings, school holidays, or full time after graduation, say so clearly.
A generic resume forces the employer to guess where you fit. A tailored resume makes the fit obvious.
If you have a White Card, First Aid, RSA, food safety certificate, Working with Children Check, or driver licence, include it where relevant. These details can change whether you are considered.
Employers should not have to fight the document. Keep your resume clean, readable, and simple.
Always ask referees for permission first. A surprised referee is rarely your strongest advocate.
A standout school leaver resume is not the fanciest one. It is the one that makes the employer feel confident enough to interview you.
Strong school leaver resumes usually have:
A clear and realistic summary
Specific skills matched to the job
Education presented cleanly
Experience written in practical workplace language
Volunteering or school activities used properly
Availability clearly stated
Certificates included where relevant
No exaggeration
No messy formatting
No generic filler
What stands out most is maturity. Not fake seriousness. Not pretending to be older. Maturity means the resume shows care, self awareness, and an understanding of what employers need.
For example, a candidate who writes “available weekends and school holidays, comfortable with customer facing work, and willing to complete training before starting” sounds easier to hire than someone who writes “I want a job to gain experience”.
Both may be true. One is employer focused. The other is candidate focused.
That difference matters.
Before you send your resume, check it against this list:
Is your name and contact information clear?
Is your email address professional?
Does your summary match the type of role you want?
Have you included your school, qualification, and completion year?
Have you included relevant subjects only where useful?
Have you included work experience, volunteering, school activities, or practical responsibilities?
Do your bullet points explain what you actually did?
Have you included certificates, licences, or checks where relevant?
Is your availability easy to find?
Have you removed personal details that are not needed?
Is the formatting simple and readable?
Have you checked spelling and grammar?
Could you confidently explain everything in an interview?
Have you tailored the resume to the role?
Have you asked referees for permission?
If the answer is yes, your resume is already ahead of many school leaver applications. Not because it is perfect, but because it does the job properly.
A school leaver resume is not meant to prove you have decades of experience. It is meant to prove you are worth a conversation.
