Create ResumeA strong part time job CV needs to prove three things quickly: you can do the work, you are reliable, and your availability matches what the employer needs. In the UK job market, part time roles are often screened fast, especially in retail, hospitality, admin, customer service, care, delivery, cleaning, tutoring, warehouse work and student jobs. That means your CV cannot be vague, messy or full of filler. It needs to show your contact details, profile, key skills, work experience, education, availability and any relevant extras in a clear order. I’ll show you the exact structure I would expect to see, what to write in each section, and the mistakes that quietly push good candidates into the no pile.
A part time job CV is not just a shorter version of a full time professional CV. It has a slightly different job. It needs to answer the employer’s practical questions before they have to ask.
When I screen a CV for a part time role, I am usually looking for answers to questions like:
Can this person work the shifts we need covered?
Have they worked with customers, teams, deadlines or responsibility before?
Do they seem reliable enough to show up consistently?
Can they learn quickly without needing constant supervision?
Have they made it easy for me to contact them?
Is this CV clear enough to understand in under a minute?
That last point matters more than people think. Many part time roles receive high volumes of applications, and recruiters rarely read every line lovingly with a cup of tea. Lovely idea. Not real life.
Use this structure for a clear, recruiter friendly part time job CV:
Name
Phone number
Email address
Town or city
LinkedIn profile, only if relevant
Right to work in the UK, only if useful or requested
Availability, especially for shift based work
Personal Profile
A short paragraph explaining what kind of role you are looking for, your most relevant strengths, and your availability.
Key Skills
A focused list of skills that match the role, such as customer service, cash handling, stock control, administration, communication, teamwork, time management, IT skills or food safety.
Work Experience
Your most relevant paid work, voluntary work, placements, internships, family business work or informal experience.
Education
School, college, university, qualifications, current study and relevant courses.
Additional Information
Languages, certificates, licences, DBS status, driving licence, first aid, food hygiene, safeguarding training, software skills or flexibility.
References
Usually write: . Do not waste space listing full referee details unless the employer specifically asks.
Your CV should make the decision easy. It should not make the employer dig through paragraphs to discover you are available evenings, have retail experience, or can start immediately.
For a UK part time job, your CV should usually be one page if you are early in your career, a student, or applying for casual work. Two pages can be acceptable if you have several years of relevant experience, but only if the extra detail genuinely helps.
This structure works because it mirrors how recruiters think. First they check identity and contact details. Then they check suitability. Then they check practical fit. Then they check evidence.
Most candidates get this wrong because they start with what they personally want. Employers start with what the job needs. Your CV needs to meet them there.
Use this template as your base and adapt it to the role.

Your personal profile should be short, practical and specific. For a part time job CV, I do not want to read a dramatic life story. I want a quick snapshot of what you can offer and whether you fit the role.
A good profile should include:
The type of part time job you are applying for
Your strongest relevant skills
Your practical availability
Your attitude to work
One small sign of reliability or experience
Weak Example
I am a hardworking and passionate person looking for a part time job. I am a team player and I am willing to learn. I believe I would be a great fit for your company.
This sounds harmless, but it tells the employer almost nothing. Every candidate says they are hardworking. The CV has to prove it.
Good Example
Reliable student seeking a part time retail role in a busy UK store. Confident helping customers, working in a team and staying organised during peak periods. Available evenings, weekends and school holidays, with previous experience supporting stock tasks, till service and customer enquiries.
Why this works: It answers the practical questions. The employer knows the role type, strengths, availability and relevant exposure immediately.
Here are a few profile examples for different part time job situations.
Student Part Time Job Profile
Motivated college student seeking a part time customer service or retail role. Confident communicating with customers, handling practical tasks and working as part of a team. Available evenings, weekends and holiday periods, with a reliable approach to attendance, learning and shift commitments.
No Experience Part Time Job Profile
Reliable and organised candidate looking for a first part time role in retail, hospitality or customer service. Strong communication skills, a positive attitude and experience managing responsibilities through school, volunteering and group projects. Available weekends and selected weekdays, with a willingness to learn quickly and support the team wherever needed.
Part Time Admin Job Profile
Organised and detail focused candidate seeking a part time administration role. Confident using email, Microsoft Office, spreadsheets and online systems, with a calm and professional communication style. Available three days per week and comfortable handling data entry, scheduling, document management and general office support.
Part Time Hospitality Job Profile
Friendly and reliable candidate seeking a part time hospitality role in a busy UK environment. Confident speaking with customers, working under pressure and supporting team members during peak service. Available evenings and weekends, with a practical approach to cleanliness, service standards and fast moving tasks.
The skills section is not a place to throw every nice sounding word at the page. It should match the job advert.
This is where I often see candidates weaken their CV. They write skills like motivated, hardworking, enthusiastic and professional. Those are not useless, but they are not enough. They are personality claims. Employers need work relevant evidence.
For a part time job CV, stronger skills include:
Customer service
Cash handling
Till operation
Stock replenishment
Food preparation
Cleaning and hygiene standards
Appointment booking
Data entry
Microsoft Office
Email communication
Complaint handling
Teamwork
Time management
Working under pressure
Following health and safety procedures
Shift flexibility
Reliability and punctuality
Basic numeracy
Organisation
Multitasking
Problem solving
Choose the skills that genuinely fit the role. Do not claim cash handling if you have never touched a till. Employers can usually tell when a CV is padded, and even if they cannot tell immediately, the interview will expose it.
A better approach is to translate your real experience into employer language.
Weak Example
I am good with people.
Good Example
Customer communication, including greeting customers, answering questions and handling requests politely.
Weak Example
I am organised.
Good Example
Organising daily tasks, tracking deadlines and keeping work areas clean, accurate and ready for use.
Weak Example
I work well under pressure.
Good Example
Staying calm and efficient during busy periods, queues, deadlines or last minute changes.
The stronger examples work because they show what the skill looks like in a workplace. That is what recruiters and hiring managers actually need.
Your work experience section should not just list duties. It should show reliability, responsibility and useful workplace behaviour.
For part time jobs, employers are often less obsessed with job titles and more interested in whether you understand work. Have you dealt with customers? Followed instructions? Turned up on time? Managed busy periods? Worked with people who were stressed, tired or impatient? Welcome to the real world of hiring.
Even if your previous role was not the same as the job you want, you can still make it relevant.
For each role, include:
Job title
Employer name
Location
Dates
Four to six practical bullet points
Evidence of responsibility, customer contact, teamwork or reliability
Good Example
Retail Assistant
Primark, Birmingham
June 2024 to Present
Supported customers on the shop floor by answering questions, locating items and keeping service friendly during busy periods
Replenished stock, organised displays and helped maintain a tidy and safe store environment
Operated tills accurately and followed cash handling procedures
Worked flexible weekend and evening shifts during peak trading periods
Helped new team members understand daily tasks and store expectations
This example works because it shows more than duties. It shows customer contact, accuracy, flexibility, teamwork and trust.
If you have no paid work experience, use other experience properly. Volunteering, school responsibilities, societies, sports teams, caring responsibilities, family business support and community work can all help, as long as you explain the transferable skills clearly.
Good Example for No Paid Experience
Volunteer Event Helper
Local Community Centre, Leeds
March 2025 to July 2025
Welcomed visitors, answered basic questions and directed people to the right areas
Helped set up rooms, organise materials and clear spaces after events
Worked with other volunteers to keep activities running on time
Developed confidence speaking with different age groups and supporting public facing tasks
Do not apologise for not having experience. Position what you do have. A CV that says I have no experience but I am willing to learn is weaker than a CV that shows reliability through real examples.

Recruiters do not read CVs in the emotional order candidates write them. They scan for risk and relevance.
For part time roles, I usually notice these things first:
Location
Availability
Recent experience
Communication style
Job hopping pattern
Gaps or unexplained dates
Whether the CV matches the job advert
Whether the candidate seems reliable
Whether the CV is easy to contact from
Whether the candidate has included irrelevant clutter
Availability is especially important in the UK part time job market. If the employer needs weekend cover and your CV does not mention weekends, you may lose out to someone with less experience but clearer availability.
That feels unfair, but it is how shortlisting often works. Employers are solving an operational problem. They need someone who can cover certain hours, not just someone who sounds nice.
If your availability is strong, put it near the top. Do not hide it at the bottom like a secret plot twist.
Many candidates worry that listing availability will make them look limited. It can, if written badly. But clear availability is usually helpful, especially for part time work.
Weak Example
Available sometimes depending on university.
This creates doubt. The employer hears: rota headache.
Good Example
Available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays after 3pm, plus Saturdays. Additional availability during university holidays.
This is clear, practical and useful.
Use one of these formats:
Available evenings and weekends
Available up to 20 hours per week
Available Monday to Friday after 4pm
Available Saturdays and Sundays, plus school holidays
Available three weekdays per week with flexible days
Available immediately for part time shifts
Available for additional hours during Christmas, Easter and summer holidays
Be honest. Do not claim full flexibility if you have lectures, childcare, transport limits or another job. Employers would rather know early than discover after offering you the role. Hidden availability issues create frustration quickly, and not the charming kind.
The biggest mistakes are usually not dramatic. They are small things that create doubt.
Mistake One: Writing a Generic Profile
A profile full of words like hardworking, passionate and motivated does not help unless it connects to the job. Employers need to understand what you can actually do.
Mistake Two: Hiding Availability
For many part time jobs, availability is not a small detail. It is one of the main screening points.
Mistake Three: Listing Duties Without Evidence
Saying served customers is fine. Saying served customers during busy weekend shifts, answered questions and kept queues moving efficiently is stronger.
Mistake Four: Including Too Much Personal Information
In the UK, you do not need to include your date of birth, marital status, nationality, full address, photo or National Insurance number. It is unnecessary and can look outdated.
Mistake Five: Making the CV Too Long
A part time job CV should be clear and compact. If you are applying for a shop assistant role, the employer does not need three paragraphs about every school project you have ever done.
Mistake Six: Using the Same CV for Every Role
A part time retail CV, part time admin CV and part time care assistant CV should not read exactly the same. The core structure can stay the same, but the skills and examples should shift.
Mistake Seven: Overusing Soft Skills Without Proof
Reliable, organised and friendly are good qualities. But they need evidence. Show the behaviour behind the claim.
Tailoring does not mean rewriting your entire CV every time. It means changing the emphasis so the employer sees the right evidence quickly.
For a part time retail job, prioritise:
Customer service
Till experience
Stock replenishment
Product knowledge
Teamwork
Weekend availability
Working during busy periods
For a part time hospitality job, prioritise:
Customer communication
Food hygiene
Cleaning standards
Speed under pressure
Teamwork
Evening and weekend availability
Handling complaints calmly
For a part time admin job, prioritise:
Data entry
Email communication
Microsoft Office
Organisation
Accuracy
Scheduling
Confidentiality
For a part time care job, prioritise:
Patience
Safeguarding awareness
Reliability
Communication
Empathy
DBS status, if relevant
Following procedures
For a part time warehouse job, prioritise:
Picking and packing
Stock accuracy
Manual handling awareness
Timekeeping
Health and safety
Shift reliability
Working to targets
The trick is to read the job advert like a recruiter. What problem is the employer trying to solve? More weekend cover? Better customer service? Admin backlog? Staff shortages? Busy Christmas trading? Your CV should quietly say: I can help with that.
Applicant tracking systems are used for many UK roles, including part time jobs at larger employers. The ATS does not magically decide your worth as a human being, despite what some internet advice suggests. It helps employers store, filter and search applications.
To keep your CV ATS friendly:
Use clear headings such as Personal Profile, Key Skills, Work Experience and Education
Save the CV as a Word document or PDF, depending on the employer’s instructions
Avoid tables, text boxes, graphics and icons that may not parse properly
Use standard job titles and keywords from the advert
Include relevant skills naturally in your profile, skills section and work experience
Keep dates clear and consistent
Avoid unusual fonts or decorative formatting
Do not obsess over ATS tricks. The best ATS strategy is still a clear CV that matches the role. Keyword stuffing looks awkward to humans, and humans still make the hiring decision.
A good CV is not just about what you include. It is also about what you remove.
Leave off:
Full home address
Date of birth
Marital status
National Insurance number
Photo, unless specifically required for a legitimate reason
Irrelevant personal details
Long paragraphs about hobbies with no relevance
Salary expectations, unless requested
Negative explanations about previous employers
Unprofessional email addresses
References with phone numbers and emails, unless requested
You can include hobbies if they add something useful. For example, team sports can support teamwork. Blogging can support writing. Volunteering can support responsibility. But watching Netflix does not need a proud little section unless the role is Chief Sofa Officer, which sadly remains under recruited.
Before sending your part time job CV, check it against this list:
Is your availability visible near the top?
Is your phone number correct?
Is your email professional?
Is your town or city included?
Does your personal profile match the role?
Have you included relevant skills from the job advert?
Does your experience show responsibility, not just duties?
Have you removed unnecessary personal information?
Is the CV easy to scan in under one minute?
Is the formatting clean and consistent?
Have you checked spelling and grammar?
Have you saved the file with a sensible name?
Use a file name like Aisha Khan Part Time Retail CV or Daniel Roberts Part Time Admin CV. Do not send a file called new cv final final updated real one. Recruiters see this more often than anyone should.
