A strong CV for a part time job in Ireland should quickly show three things: when you can work, whether you are reliable, and whether you can handle the actual tasks of the role. For most part time jobs, employers are not reading your CV like a long career history. They are scanning it to decide whether you are available, suitable, easy to train, and likely to show up.
That is the part many candidates miss. They write a CV to look impressive, when the employer is usually asking a much simpler question: Can this person do the job, fit the rota, deal with customers or tasks properly, and not create more work for the manager?
Below is the CV template I would actually recommend for part time jobs in the Irish job market.
Use this structure for retail, hospitality, customer service, warehouse, admin, cleaning, childcare, tutoring, student jobs, weekend work, evening work, seasonal work, and general part time roles in Ireland.
Your Name
Location: Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Kilkenny, Sligo or your local area
Phone: Your Irish mobile number
Email: Professional email address
LinkedIn: Optional, only include if relevant
Availability: Example: Available evenings, weekends and school holidays
Notice Period: Example: Immediate start or one week notice
Reliable and motivated candidate looking for a part time role in retail, hospitality, customer service or administration. Comfortable working with customers, handling busy environments, following instructions and supporting a team. Available for evening and weekend shifts, with a flexible approach to rota changes where possible.
Customer service
Cash handling
When I look at a part time CV from a recruitment perspective, I am not expecting a perfect career story. I am looking for signs that the person understands the job and can be trusted with the basics.
For part time roles in Ireland, employers usually care about:
Your availability
Your location and ability to get to work
Your reliability
Your communication skills
Your customer service ability, if the role is public facing
Your willingness to learn
Your previous work, volunteering or school experience
Availability is not a small detail. For many part time jobs, it is the deciding factor.
A candidate with average experience but perfect availability can beat a stronger candidate who can only work awkward hours. This happens constantly in Irish hiring, especially in retail, hospitality, supermarkets, cafés, hotels, call centres, healthcare support, childcare, events and seasonal work.
Do not hide your availability at the bottom of your CV. Put it near the top.
Good Example
Availability: Available Monday to Friday after 4pm, full weekends and school holidays.
Good Example
Availability: Available for evening and weekend shifts. Immediate start.
Good Example
Availability: Available Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Flexible during college holidays.
Weak Example
Flexible.
The problem with “flexible” is that it sounds useful but tells the employer almost nothing. Flexible could mean anything. A hiring manager building a rota does not want to guess. They want clear working times.
In Ireland, especially for part time jobs, rota fit matters. A manager may have ten CVs that look decent, but only three people can work the actual shifts needed. Those three move up the list very quickly.
Your personal profile should be short, practical and matched to the role. It should not be a dramatic summary of your life goals. Nobody hiring for a Saturday retail role needs five lines about your passion for excellence and dynamic environments. That kind of language usually makes a CV weaker, not stronger.
A good personal profile should answer:
What type of role are you looking for?
What strengths make you suitable?
What kind of work environment can you handle?
What availability do you offer?
Reliable student looking for a part time role in customer service, retail or hospitality. Confident communicating with customers, working in a team and handling busy shifts. Available evenings, weekends and school holidays, with a strong record of punctuality and responsibility through school, volunteering and previous part time work.
Motivated and dependable candidate seeking a part time role in retail, hospitality or customer service. Quick to learn, comfortable following instructions and willing to support the team wherever needed. Available for weekend and evening shifts, with a positive attitude and strong communication skills.
The skills section should match the job. Do not throw in every skill you can think of. Recruiters and hiring managers can spot a copy and paste skills list immediately.
For part time jobs in Ireland, the strongest skills are usually practical, behaviour based and easy to connect to the role.
Customer service
Till operation
Cash handling
Stock replenishment
Merchandising
Handling customer queries
Working during busy periods
Your work experience does not need to be impressive in a corporate sense. It needs to be relevant.
A hiring manager does not only care whether you had the exact same job before. They care whether your past experience shows useful patterns.
Useful patterns include:
You dealt with people
You handled responsibility
You worked to deadlines
You followed instructions
You worked as part of a team
You handled busy periods
You showed up consistently
No experience does not mean no evidence. This is a major misconception.
If you have no paid work experience, use:
School projects
College projects
Volunteering
Sports teams
Clubs and societies
Babysitting
Helping in a family business
Community work
For many part time job applicants in Ireland, especially students, education can sit above work experience if you have limited employment history.
Keep it simple.
Leaving Certificate Student
School Name, Dublin
2023 to Present
Relevant subjects: Business, English, Maths, Home Economics
Or:
Bachelor of Business Studies
University of Galway
2024 to Present
Relevant modules: Marketing, Accounting, Business Communication, Data Analysis
You do not need to list every subject unless it helps the job. For example, Home Economics may support food service roles. Business may support retail or admin. Computer Science may support office, tech support or data entry roles.
Recruiters are not looking for a school transcript. They are looking for context.
For most part time jobs, your CV should be one page if you are a student, school leaver or early career candidate. Two pages is acceptable if you have several years of work experience, but do not stretch it unnecessarily.
A part time CV should be easy to scan. The employer may be reviewing applications between shifts, interviews, rota issues and customer problems. This is not an academic review.
Use a clean structure:
Name and contact details
Availability
Personal profile
Key skills
Work experience
Education
Certifications
Job ads often use vague language. Candidates take it literally, but recruiters read between the lines.
This usually means the rota changes, shifts may include evenings or weekends, and the employer wants someone who will not be difficult every time hours move slightly. It does not mean you must be available every hour of your life. Be honest about your availability.
This means busy. It may also mean understaffed at times. The employer wants someone who will stay calm, move quickly and not freeze when there is pressure.
This often means you will need to help outside your narrow task list. In retail or hospitality, that could mean restocking, cleaning, covering breaks or helping another section.
Preferred does not mean required. If your CV shows reliability, availability and good communication, you may still be considered.
This means the employer likely has a rota gap now. Your notice period matters. If you can start quickly, say it clearly near the top of your CV.
This is why a part time CV should not be written in vague language. The employer’s problem is practical. Your CV should make the solution obvious.
Most weak part time CVs do not fail because the person is unsuitable. They fail because the CV makes the employer work too hard.
If the employer has to call you just to find out whether you can work weekends, your CV is already weaker than the person who stated it clearly.
Weak Example
I am a hardworking, enthusiastic and passionate individual who works well independently and as part of a team.
This says almost nothing. It is not terrible, just forgettable.
Good Example
Reliable student looking for a part time retail role. Available evenings and weekends, with experience helping customers, handling payments and keeping busy work areas organised.
The second version gives the employer usable information.
A duty says what you were meant to do. A good bullet point shows how you worked.
Weak Example
Worked in a shop.
Good Example
Assisted customers, operated the till and replenished stock during busy weekend shifts.
Tailoring does not mean rewriting every sentence. It means moving the most relevant evidence closer to the top.
For a retail job, emphasise:
Customer service
Till experience
Stock work
Weekend availability
Communication
Handling busy periods
For a hospitality job, emphasise:
Food or drink service
Many larger employers in Ireland use online application systems or applicant tracking systems. This is common with supermarkets, retail chains, hotels, call centres, healthcare providers and larger hospitality groups.
For part time jobs, ATS screening is usually not as complex as senior hiring, but it still matters.
Use clear job relevant words such as:
Part time
Customer service
Retail
Hospitality
Sales assistant
Cash handling
Stock replenishment

Time management
This CV works because it answers the real hiring questions.
It shows availability near the top. It gives the employer a location. It explains the type of role the candidate wants. It uses evidence from volunteering and babysitting instead of pretending the candidate has formal experience they do not have.
It also avoids a common mistake: trying too hard to sound impressive. For part time jobs, credibility matters more than fancy language. A hiring manager would rather read a plain, believable CV than a dramatic one full of empty claims.
The CV also shows transferable experience. Babysitting is not retail, but it can show responsibility, communication, punctuality and trust. Charity shop volunteering is not the same as paid retail, but it is close enough to show customer contact, organisation and shop floor awareness.
That is how recruiters think. We are not just matching job titles. We are looking for evidence that predicts whether the person can do the work.
A part time CV should be focused. Leave out anything that creates distraction, confusion or unnecessary personal detail.
Do not include:
Your full home address
Your date of birth
A photo, unless specifically required for a niche reason
Nationality or marital status
Long explanations about why you left every job
Salary expectations unless requested
Unrelated hobbies with no useful context
Before applying, check your CV like a recruiter would.
Ask yourself:
Can the employer see my availability within five seconds?
Is my phone number correct?
Does my email address look professional?
Have I matched the skills to the job?
Have I shown evidence, not just claims?
Is my CV one page if I am early career?
Are my dates clear?
Use this checklist before sending your CV to employers in Ireland.
Your name and contact details are clear
Your location is included
Your availability is near the top
Your notice period is included if useful
Your personal profile is specific to part time work
Your skills match the job type
Your work experience uses practical bullet points
Your education section is clear and relevant

Whether your CV is easy to understand quickly
This is where many candidates overcomplicate things. A part time CV does not need to sound like a corporate leadership profile. If you are applying for a café job, a supermarket role, a hotel shift, a barista position, a warehouse role or weekend retail work, the hiring manager wants clarity.
They want to know:
Can you work the shifts I need covered?
Will you turn up on time?
Can you speak to customers properly?
Will you need constant supervision?
Are you likely to leave after two weeks?
That may sound blunt, but it is the practical reality behind a lot of part time hiring.

Here is the recruiter reality: skills only matter when they sound believable. If you have never worked in customer service, do not claim advanced customer relationship management. Say you are confident speaking with people, handling questions politely and learning quickly. That sounds far more credible.
You stayed organised
You solved small problems without drama
That last one matters more than people realise. In many part time jobs, managers are not looking for someone to reinvent the business. They want someone who can handle normal problems calmly and not turn every issue into a production.

The mistake is saying “I have no experience” and leaving half the CV empty. Employers are not only hiring experience. They are hiring signs of reliability, maturity and trainability.

The biggest CV mistake I see for part time jobs is poor prioritisation. Candidates use too much space on generic personal statements and not enough space on availability, relevant tasks, customer experience and shift reliability.
Some candidates try to make a part time CV sound like a senior management application. It becomes stiff and unnatural. A good CV is professional, but it should still sound like a real person.
Babysitting, volunteering, helping at events, sports coaching, tutoring and family business support can all be useful if presented properly. Do not overstate it, but do not ignore it either.
A café, a supermarket, a warehouse and an office admin role do not value the exact same evidence. You do not need to rewrite the whole CV each time, but your profile and skills should reflect the job.
Cleaning standards
Working under pressure
Team communication
Evening and weekend availability
HACCP or food safety
For an admin job, emphasise:
Accuracy
Email and phone communication
Microsoft Office
Organisation
Data entry
Professional communication
For a warehouse job, emphasise:
Manual handling
Stock accuracy
Physical reliability
Working to targets
Health and safety
Early morning or evening availability
For a student part time job, emphasise:
Availability around study
Reliability
Communication
Willingness to learn
Volunteering or school responsibilities
Any customer facing experience
The employer should be able to glance at your CV and think, “Yes, this person fits this role.” That is the point of tailoring.
Barista
Food service
Admin support
Data entry
Warehouse operative
Manual handling

Evening shifts
Do not hide everything inside a designed CV template with text boxes, columns and graphics. Some systems read those badly. A simple Word document or PDF with clear headings is usually safer.
The CV does not need to look fancy. It needs to be readable by both a system and a tired hiring manager with twenty applications open.
Cash handling awareness
Stock replenishment
Organisation
Problem solving
Working under pressure

Available on request.
Overdesigned graphics and icons
References with personal contact details unless requested
Exaggerated claims you cannot explain in an interview
In Ireland, employers do not need personal details that are unrelated to your ability to do the job. Keep the CV professional and relevant.
For hobbies, only include them if they add something useful. For example, team sports can support teamwork and commitment. Drama or debating can support communication. Volunteering can support responsibility. Gaming, socialising or “watching Netflix” will not help unless the job is somehow connected, and even then, tread carefully.
Have I included my location or general area?
Have I removed irrelevant personal details?
Would a busy hiring manager understand this quickly?
The last question is the one most people skip.
A CV is not just a document about you. It is a decision tool for someone else. If you make that decision easier, you improve your chances.
Volunteering or informal experience is included if useful
Certifications are listed where relevant
The CV is easy to read on a phone or laptop
The CV is saved as a PDF unless the employer asks for Word
The file name is professional, such as Aoife Murphy CV
There are no spelling mistakes
The CV sounds believable and human
That is what makes a part time CV work. Not buzzwords. Not a colourful template. Not pretending every task was a major achievement. Just clear, relevant evidence that shows you can do the job and fit the rota.
